The Story Behind My First Keepsake Bear
Fourteen years ago I met my wonderful husband. He was wearing Wrangler jeans and a blue Wildlife shirt. That shirt became one of those items I simply could not throw away because it holds so much sentimental value. For years it stayed safely in the closet.
In February this year I lost my best friend in a car accident. During that time I started thinking about memory bears made from clothing and how special it would be to turn meaningful fabric into something comforting.
I really wanted to try making a keepsake memory bear, even though my sewing skills are quite limited because I mostly crochet.
My First Attempt at Making a Memory Bear
Thanks to the internet—and my husband who always pushes me to try new things—I decided to attempt making my very first memory bear from clothing using his Wildlife shirt.
If it weren’t for his encouragement, I probably would not have finished it.
It was incredibly challenging and definitely the most difficult thing I have ever made. Sewing a bear is very different from crocheting, and every step required patience and determination.
A Memory That Can Be Hugged
This bear is now very special to me. Instead of a shirt hidden in a cupboard, the memory is now something I can display and hold.
Here’s to my first keepsake memory bear and hopefully many more to come.
